SETA, SLM and Salt EB’s ROOtZ programme in Philippi hosted 90 informal traders and micro business in November.
So many South Africans depend on the informal sector to provide them with meals, clothing, goods and services at affordable prices. The convenience of these goods and services being accessible in people’s communities is also important.
In a struggling economy, the informal and micro sector not only provides a cushion to the formal sector but also creates business and income opportunities for those who cannot find employment.
ROOtZ was founded to serve the needs of schoolchildren in Philippi but the end-game has always been about developing young South Africans to take their place in the economy. This programme certainly played a role in improving the skills of the traders and micro enterprises working hard not only to survive but stretch for the South African dream.
